Caffeine

I know, I know you need your coffee I’m there with you mom, but more thant 2 cups a day or daily coffee drinking or consuming other caffeinated beverages can decrease your milk supply.

High Mercury Fish

Fish generally has great benefits for you and baby, but fish such as swordfish is high in mercury and could affect baby’s brain.

Garlic

Garlic can actually change the taste of your breastmilk. This change may cause the baby to not want to nurse. However, if you regularly eat garlic baby may not notice the taste.

Peppermint

A cup of peppermint tea is essentially harmless. However getting a massage with peppermint essential oils can be harmful to a mothers milk supply as it can entree the blood stream.

Spicy Food

Although harmless to your supply spicy food could irritate a baby with a sensitive digestive system or a baby with a skin condition such as eczema.

Alcohol

A glass of wine here or there is pretty harmless, however bigger consumptions of alcohol can actual tank your supply tremendously.

As a nursing mom I know keeping up with your supply can be such a journey so knowing what to avoid that will go against all your hard work is key. If you feel something you are eating is decreasing your milk supply or causing your baby to be irritated you should stop consumption immediately. You may also consult your lactation nurse or pediatrician if you need further help.
