Mama Needs Some Time To Herself; The Importance of Me Time
As a mother, we wear many hats on a day to day basis. We are the caretakers, maid, chef, teacher/tutor and more. It becomes second nature we sometimes don't realize how much we do in our daily routine. We often feel as if "it's our job" or "we chose this life, we can't complain." We often feel like we have to put everyone's needs, especially our child(ren), before our own.
WRONG! (TO A CERTAIN EXTENT)
You are a person with needs and deserve a moment to yourself to do something you enjoy. Whether its something as small as going to the mall and buying a new pair of shoes or taking a day trip out with your partner or closest friend. Having me-time helps you to relax mentally and physically by not having to care for someone other than yourself for a moment.
I was horrible at taking me-time because of my detachment issues, and I felt selfish for needing one. I would think "how dare I need a break from someone I created." When indeed I was crying on the inside for a break because I am always caring for others along with myself 24/7. I NEEDED a break! I had a balance of needing me-time and not wanting to leave my babies side. (detachment issues) However, I had to learn that he needed a break from me, just as much as I needed a break from him. Win, win.
IT'S OKAY TO LEAVE YOUR LITTLE ONE WITH A TRUSTED FAMILY MEMBER AND ENJOY YOURSELF.
Never let anyone shame you for needed a moment to yourself. Like I said before, as a mother we wear many hats and we deserve moments to ourself WITHOUT the distractions of house duties or our little ones and sometimes even our partners.
HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR ME-TiMe (OR MOMENTS)
Suggest that your partner or trusted family take the kid(s) out the house for a few hours so you can take a much needed nap.
- Get a mani and pedi. Manicures and pedicures are a relaxing way to relieve stress. I suggest going to a shop that serves alcoholic beverages. (If that's your thing of course)
- Have lunch with your closest friend or family. Make it your mission to go out for lunch (or dinner) at least once a month.
- Send the kids to a trusted family members house for a few hours. Snuggle on the couch with your favorite snack and bottle of wine. DON'T clean. Just enjoy your alone time! You have time to clean later.
- Attend a yoga class.
- Get a massage.
- Log on to facebook and look at local events. Plan to attend one.
The possibilities of me-time are endless. Do something that relaxes and makes you happy. Plan one for yourself monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly! Pick a schedule that fits in well with your lifestyle and or needs. When you feel your best mentally, your kids will feel their best. Take care of yourself just like you do for everyone else. I hope this helps!
